The Hills That Raised Us - 2025
The Hills That Raised Us is a short photographic series by Chukwudi Nwachukwu Photographed in the year 2025 in Uturu, Abia State, a rural village known for its red mud hills and clay with movement of people along its roadside markets. The work focuses on young traders who sell groundnuts along the road, balancing trays on their heads while navigating passing vehicles and travellers.
These portraits capture the children not only as traders but as individuals shaped by their environment. The hills of Uturu appear quietly in the background of each frame, forming a landscape that watches over their daily routines. In this series, the hills become more than geography; they become a metaphor for the places and circumstances that shape young lives.
The Hills That Raised Us reflects on childhood, responsibility, and the subtle ways environments raise us. It is a quiet observation of resilience, dignity, and the early encounters with labour that form part of many African childhoods.
